To celebrate the end of exams we headed out to Kenji – a Japanese restaurant mum has been wanting to try for ages. We decided to share nasu dengaku, agedashi tofu, a dragon roll and a platter of sushi and sashimi.

I’ve not eaten agedashi tofu in Japan, so I’m not exactly sure what it’s supposed to be like, but this one wasn’t that wonderful. Similar to the agedashi tofu at Japas, it wasn’t very smooth, the crumb wasn’t crispy and there was a lot of sauce, which made the coating gluggy. The best agedashi tofu I’ve tried so far is still that little Japanese cafe in that laneway in Melbourne Central, next to Boost.

While the nasu dengaku was somewhat expensive, it was done well. The top was nicely caramelised with the miso and the eggplant was silky smooth.

The dragon roll was the nicest sushi from the night. Not quite up to Koko standards, but it still had good flavour.

Halfway through the meal mum decided to add on a bowl of kitsune udon. This was well worth it; the soup was flavoursome and the udon smooth but chewy.
