Horn Please

North Fitzroy stalwart Horn Please was originally opened by Jessi and Jennifer Singh back in 2012, quickly becoming popular for its tasty Indian fare. The husband and wife team has since handed the reigns over to Amar Singh, who has also taken over Dhaba at the Mill in Kyneton. Now both owner and head chef, Amar Singh continues to cook up traditional dishes from different regions of India, but with a bit of a twist.

They stock a fridge full of imported international beers and ciders to create a sort of global dining experience. It’s not just curries on the food menu – there are plenty of street food dishes to try. Colonel Tso’s Cauliflower comes with a tomato chilli sauce and a thin batter. Its tangy, sour flavour is followed by an after-taste of mild spices. The plate is quickly wiped clean. Tandoori Chicken is Horn Please’s specialty. The juicy free-range chicken is marinated then cooked in the tandoor, before being served with a a fresh combination of diced tomato and green mango. Yoghurt and mint sauce make for good accompaniments, and it’s amongst the best tandoori chicken I’ve tried of late.

Batak Curry is a roasted leg of duck in tomato cream ragout, fresh turmeric and whole spice bouquet garni. It’s creamy, a touch sweet, and not that spicy. The tender duck dish appears to be quite a popular order around the room. The Goat Bhuna Masala is another roasted dish, this one having a rich onion and tomato gravy, packing plenty of flavour and spices into the bowl. We pair our curries with a mixed basket of naan and flavoured rice. The large tear-drop shaped flatbread is soft and crisp, and the garlic and chive is my favourite of the three varieties, but all are happily taken home to enjoy later.
