Hoping to grab a quite bite before heading in to work, I pop into Hard Pressed, situated within easy access by train and tram. The interior is dark and very retro, and despite the wet and dreary Melbourne weather they’re doing a good trade.

El Cubano – Orange braised pork, Swiss cheese, pickles, Dijon mustard ($15)

They’ve been known for their sandwiches, or tortas, but on my visit they seemed to have cut back on the torta menu and there’s only one.

I try the one torta available, their famed El Cubano. Filled with orange braised pork, Swiss cheese, pickles, Dijon mustard, it’s a hearty eat. The ciabatta bread is nicely toasted, although the sauce spilled out making some parts a bit wet. Large and satisfying, I can see why it’s been rated as one of the best Cubanos in Melbourne.
