Gami Chicken & Beer, Hawthorn

Gami Hawthorn

There are many Korean Fried Chicken chains all around Melbourne, but Gami is one of my favourites. Gami is Korean for “beautiful taste”, and what a beautiful taste indeed.

Unmissable Chicken - Crispy Original, luscious Sweet Chilli, unique Galbi Chicken and spicy Gochu Mayo with Sweet Mustard dipping sauce $52

Of course, KFC of the Korean kind is the feature, and the Unmissable Chicken was a great way to taste multiple best-selling flavours of Korean Fried Chicken on offer. Each flavour is delectable, though my favourite still has to be the Sweet Chilli. With the crunchy exterior, and tender and juicy interior, it’s KFC done well.

Seafood Pancake, Japchae, Fried Rice Cake, Prawn Mandu, Unmissable Chicken, Yuzu Gin, Citrus Cocktail
Gami Prawn Mandu - Premium hand-made mandu filled with real chunky prawn meats wrapped up in crusty thin skin, 5 for $14.50
Seafood Pancake - Crispy pan-fried pancake with assorted seafood and spring onion in savoury Korean batter served with chilli soy sauce $16
Japchae - Sweet potato noodles stir-fried with chicken, mushrooms and vegetables in sweet soy sauce $15.50

There’s a great range of other dishes to indulge in too: the Prawn Mandu are crunchy and almost bursting with filling, the Japchae has a lovely smokiness to it and is not too sweet, and we loved the textural contrast of the Fried Rice Cake from the deep-frying.

Hotteok - Glutinous pancake filled with creamy melted black sugar and various nuts, sprinkled with crushed peanuts $8.50; Gami K-Donut - Glutinous donuts filled with sweet red bean paste drizzled with caramel syrup and condensed milk, sprinkled with crushed peanuts $7.90

Chewy Hotteok and Gami K-Donuts are the perfect way to finish an enjoyable meal in this cheerful, colourful and casual setting. Hotteok were one of the street foot highlights from my trip to South Korea, and I’m glad there’s another place to get them here.

Yuzu Gin - A sip of citrusy paradise with zesty yuzu, gin, tonic water, and a finishing touch with dried orange $12.90; Citrus Cocktail - Gami fruit puree, Coconut jelly, Soju, Lemon, Lime $12.90

Gami has come a long way in the last 17 years, and with 37 stores across Australia and 26 locations in Victoria alone, you likely won’t have to travel too far for your Gami fix. With value meals like fried drumsticks and chips, bibimbap, and gochujang chicken (most of which are under $14!), it can be quite budget friendly too.
