Denmark House

There’s a hidden Danish oasis on Little Bourke St called Denmark house, where you’ll enjoy their cuisine in a restaurant with Danish design, and furniture designed in the motherland. It’s spacious, simple and clean, yet comfortable – after all, the Danes did come up with hygge.

We’re here to try the smørrebrød, which are available during lunch service. Most come on dark rye bread dotted with seeds, making them fIlling in a good, healthy way. You can order them a la carte, or go for the chef’s selection of the day.

The sourdough rye bread is often eaten in Denmark as a sandwich, but the open face of the smørrebrød allows the kitchen to showcase a greater range of textures, flavours and ingredients. Denmark House’s smørrebrød are feature interesting and well balanced combinations of flavours. Our favourites include the Gedeost and Kyllingebryst. The goats cheese flavour in the Gedeost is not too strong, there’s a gentle nuttiness from the walnuts, and there’s a nice tang to the dish too. The bacon of the Kyllingebryst brings some salt to the more subtle flavours of the chicken, and the chicken itself is moist and smooth, despite being breast meat. There’s a fair few herring options, and surprisingly the dill marinated herring of the Dild Sild is not as overpowering as we thought it would be.

Denmark House

The menu at Denmark House opens up at dinnertime to feature other New Nordic dishes. It’s the perfect place to explore a different cuisine, and get a little taster of Danish culture.
