It’s been 10 years since Cecconi’s moved to it’s current Flinders Lane location from Southbank, now hidden under street level. The family-run restaurant is under the headship of matriarch Olimpia Bortolotto, serving classic Italian food. Aside from the main restaurant, there’s also a private cellar bar, and the more casual and more affordable cantina which provide different dining experiences.

Our long lunch begins with Cured Kingfish, prepared with coriander seed, mustard, pomegranate, and pickled carrots, making for a light and fresh start to the meal. This is followed by the Roast Venison special with a kale, sorrel and rocket salad, macadamia nuts, pecorino cheese and port wine poached figs.

We come to the the heart-warming section of the menu: rice and pasta. We indulge in the Risotto Special of peas, dill and juicy and firm lobster meat, before switching to the slippery smooth and al dente pappardelle with hearty beef and pork ragu, red wine and tomato. So many comforting flavours.

Venison Tagliata features beetroot prepared both roasted and in gel form. Wilted beetroot leaves adorn each cube and dob of the vibrant vegetable. The exterior surface of the venison is well seasoned. The Crispy-skinned Barramundi special comes with pickled lotus and corn. The slight tang and sweetness of its accompaniments play nicely with the delicate sweetness and texture of the fish.

For desserts we start with the Zabaione, olive oil torta, cream patisserie, and crunchy candied almonds. The torta is firm and smooth, the sponge cake becoming a great vehicle for soaking up the liqueur sauce. The Bomboloni are filled with dulce de leche, and are teamed up with coconut sorbet and thinly sliced and grilled pineapple. The doughnuts are a delight, being lovely and airy, and not overly oily.

Popular for business lunches and special occasions, when you come to Cecconi’s you can expect classic Italian and large and elegant space to enjoy it in.
