Jumping Chicken with Baguette – Mauritian ‘Chop Suey’ Chicken with Vegetables ($12.50)

I know very little about Mauritius, let alone its food, so finding and trying a restaurant in Melbourne serving Mauritian food offered an exciting prospect. Mauritius is a small island east of Madagascar and the cuisine there has been subject to French, Chinese and Indian influences.

A number of dishes are ordered to share. Creole spiced fried octopus is very peppery. There are also taro fritters, which turn out to be dense balls of taro accompanied by a tomato and coriander chutney, and authentic tasting samoussas filled with vegetable curry. One of the specials, a salmon and zucchini stack, is also called for and it’s tasty and satisfying.
