13 Feb Zero Mode, Box Hill
Zero Mode is one of Box Hill’s newest all day eateries. The menu is Modern Asian, often taking the form of a fusion of different cuisines. We visit for dinner, and the dishes we try today tend more towards East Asian and South East Asian flavours. First, drinks to start. The refreshing Japanese Mode has quite a notable matcha flavour, which is a pleasant surprise.
Tempura Cauliflower kicks things off with a bang. The crispy bites are paired with Thai yellow curry cream, curry leaf and shredded cheese. Chargrilled Drunken Prawns king prawns are topped with quite a decent amount of savoury, meaty jiu niang rice paste. At this point we regretted not adding a side order of rice to finish off the sauces. The Duck Salad sees sliced duck pieces combined with watercress, beetroot, honey mustard dressing, lychee, macadamia and chili.
Triple Cooked Beef Ribs are slightly sweet and melt-in-the-mouth tender, and Rendang Beef, which has quite a prominent cardamom flavour, is served nasi lemak style with crispy anchovy, peanuts, cucumber, sambal, fried egg and rice.
Our meal at Zero Mode is wrapped up with delicious cakes by Bibelot. The breakfast and lunch menu also has quite a number of eye-catching dishes, and is sure to attract repeat customers.
