Wonderbao, Melbourne CBD

I completely forgot to post this on time, so my memory of the experience may not be quite accurate. Mum wanted me to try Wonderbao, which she had been hearing many good things about, particularly the pork belly with preserved vegetables. Before embarking on my quest to actually find this little shop, I looked up maps and route descriptions but still managed to get lost momentarily because I walked right past the entrance.

The fried silky tofu gua bao was eaten on site as I didn’t think it would keep very well after the journey home. The silky tofu had a thin layer of batter, which added some crispiness but didn’t displace the tofu from being from the center of the dish. The braised pork belly gua bao was very similar to the fried silky tofu one, but didn’t have sweet soy sauce added. The pork belly wasn’t as melt-in-your-mouth as I had hoped, but was still good. I forget the comparison between the da pork and da chicken bao but I do remember they weren’t as impressive as the special gua bao. The actual bread used was softer and fluffier than the majority of bao I’ve tried, though mum commented that the bao in her hometown was still much better.
