30 May Umaido, Box Hill
The area around Box Hill central is a competitive one for restaurants and cafes; there’s no shortage of places to choose from. Umaido is one of the few Japanese eateries within Box Hill Central, and is the chosen location for a quick dinner pit stop.
There are specials on most days of the week. It’s a Monday, which means the unagi maki is half price. I love unagi, so why not? Unfortunately the unagi maki is mostly made up of rice, and the rice is also dry and not packed properly. The presence of avocado does alleviate the dryness somewhat.
The udon I choose for the main event is a less common one to find. The soup is based on soy milk and white miso, and it’s topped with black fungus and grilled, battered chicken. Although the udon doesn’t have the slight chew that I like, the soup is quite good.
Although the sushi didn’t stand out tonight, the udon was pretty decent. For a meal of something other than Chinese, you could do worse than Umaido.
