Truman Cafe, Albert Park

Truman Cafe

Popular with locals and cyclists passing by, Truman Cafe in its family-friendly street corner digs since 2011. The previous owner’s personal collection of odds and ends are proudly displayed all over the walls, counters and shelves, and even patrons bring in their retro finds to add to the charm of the place. There are Army Men ant trails and souvenirs from all over Australia and overseas, everything interspersed with greenery.  It’s all very kitsch.

Truman Cafe

There are just as many seats outside as there are inside, and those outside enjoying the weather have the privilege on sitting on chairs that bring back memories of my primary school days.

Allpress coffee is served here, and there’s a large selection of freshly pressed juices and smoothies quirkily named after various celebrities. We tried the refreshing Roberta Flack and Brooke Shields juices, and the thick, tasty and filling David Bowie smoothie.

Truman Cafe - Reuben - Spiced corned beef, pickled cabbage, rocket, dijon mustard, relish ($15)

We ordered a gluten-free and dairy free version of their Reuben. The gluten free bread supplied by GoGF didn’t taste too much different from regular bread, and though it was missing the cheese component that technically makes up a Reuben, the house made mayo was tasty and contributed some needed moisture. House-cured brisket had been poached for three hours, and had an interesting ham-like appearance and texture.

Truman Cafe - Salad Special - Lamb backstrap with roasted chat potato, braised fennel, spinach, roasted capsicum, green beans, olives ($16)

One of the specials of the day was the lamb backstrap salad with chat poatoes, spinach, green beans and olives. Cooked to medium-rare, the lamb was complemented by the roasted capsicum, and kept moist by braised fennel.

Truman Cafe - Haloumi Brekkie - Pumpkin, leek and sesame seed smash on sourdough multigrain, poached eggs, grilled haloumi, kale and walnut pesto, toasted seeds ($16.50)

Haloumi Brekkie – Pumpkin, leek and sesame seed smash on sourdough multigrain, poached eggs, grilled haloumi, kale and walnut pesto, toasted seeds ($16.50)

The giant pile of pumpkin and leek on sourdough multigrain and two poached eggs made the Haloumi Brekkie a massive undertaking. There was a nice balance of sweet pumpkin and saltiness from the kale and walnut pesto and haloumi. Sesame and pumpkin seeds helped keep things from being all too mushy. Needless to say, I was pretty full after conquering it.
