11 Dec The Coventry, South Melbourne
A new cafe has opened right across the road from South Melbourne Market – The Coventry offers local specialty coffee sourced from Cote Terra, and a Mediterranean-influenced menu.
The soft and pillowy Gnocchi a la Noire are paired with chunky porcini mushrooms, chicken, pesto, and white wine sauce. Shavings of cheese bring some punch to the flavours of the dish. A refreshing menu option that will be perfect for summer is the The Citrus House Cured Salmon Salad – a mixture of grapefruit, cured salmon, avocado, mango, pomegranate, and a garlic aioli dressing. Coventry Wedges are nice and crunchy, and the unexpectedly generous serving is topped with bacon, melted cheese and sour cream.
The Coventry’s take on Fish and Chips sees finely cubed tuna tartare with cornichons, capers, shallots and lotus root crisps, and in place of potato, polenta chips with a fine, crisp crumb. The dish overall is a tasty one, and the addition of balsamic adds a nice lift to the fresh tuna.
With a contemporary menu, and ingredients that are all very fresh and well-handled by the kitchen, The Coventry is a welcome addition to South Melbourne.
