I haven’t eaten at many pubs in Melbourne before, so this was something quite different. I had one of the specials of the day: Grilled Kangaroo with Pepper Sauce, Mashed Potatoes, Sweetcorn and Zucchini Fritter ($24). Service was…not the best and it took a long time for our food to come. The food (or at least my dish, anyway) helped make up for it. At the back of my mind I wondered if the kangaroo would be overcooked, especially because it was a daily special and not a regular dish. I was well pleased to find that it was cooked to a nice, medium-rare. It came with a rather large amount of herbed, mashed potato and a crispy corn and zucchini fritter. To my surprise I found some beansprouts, and possibly julienned black fungus underneath the meat. It wasn’t bad, but it did seem like an odd combination. I also did think there was a bit too much salt on the surface of the kangaroo when eaten together with the pepper sauce, but apart from that I was pretty happy.
