The Bank on Collins

From the guys behind Father’s Office comes The Bank on Collins restaurant and bar. Located within the former home of ‘The Bank of Australasia’, it presents a rather grand impression on arrival with its metal balustrades, dark polished floors and golden detailing.

At first, the main dining area on the right side of the lobby seemed smaller than it could be given how large the lobby was, but they will also cater for corporate events, parties and weddings for up to 700 people, utilising the vast space provided by both the ground level and mezzanine area. The restaurant also features a cocktail area and private dining room, and the impressively classy, well-stocked bar features a long (17 meter) bronze bar top and numerous beer and wine taps.

The a la carte menu features items from salads and small plates to burgers and mains, and everything is made in-house. The meat and produce is all hormone-free and local, including grass-fed King Island beef, Otway Ranges free-range pork, hormone-free La Ionica chickens and grass-fed Gippsland lamb.

W went for a seafood dish. The crispy skin salmon did indeed have a well-seasoned and nice crispy skin and its accompanying citrus creme fraiche, and pistachios, craisins, and cherry tomato quinoa salad kept things light.

I went for something a bit heavier instead, going for the duo pork board. There was both slow-roasted BBQ pork with crackling, and a large mound of slow-cooked pulled pork, served on a plate rather than an actual board. The BBQ pork and crackling was quite good, though was mostly fat. I quite enjoyed the pulled pork, which was tender, spicy, and slightly sweet. To go with the pork was some purple pickled horseradish coleslaw, house-made jalapeno coleslaw, and mini corn tortillas. The tortillas were a little dry, but once I’d made some DIY tacos with the other components they were’t too bad. I found the jalapeno coleslaw too creamy for my tastes, however, the pickled horseradish coleslaw had a satisfying tang to it and was a great match for the flavours of the pork, cutting through some of the fattiness and adding the extra dimension of flavour that was needed.

The Bank on Collins

The Bank on Collins only just started service last week so it’ll be interesting to see how it goes. For opening week it was a pretty solid effort that left generally positive impressions.

I love that salmon dish! Father’s Office has 50% off after 11pm on Wed+. We had the same dish at both places and the consistency’s great. 🙂
