29 Jan Tamper Food and Coffee, Prahran
From On High got a new lease on life when its owners decided on a complete revamp. The newly minted Tamper Food and Coffee has a fresh new interior and a brand new menu. Inside, there’s a cosy vibe going for it, whether it’s at the front tables, the back section by the open kitchen, or the upstairs room, which is also available for functions.
Our fast is broken with some Iced Latte, which is rather good and not watered down in flavour at all, and a fresh-tasting Kale-El Smoothie with kale, apple, mango, coconut water, white chia seeds. The Mero miso in the creamy hollandaise of the Miso Benedict is not too prominent, though it is quite tangy, which provides contrast to the earthy, charred flavour of the broccoli. Slivers of almonds deliver an enjoyable toasty crunch.
Stacked on top of the plump Hash are grilled halloumi and fried egg. Charred asparagus, king brown mushrooms and of particular note, a roast red pepper and sweet corn chutney puree, also accompany the medley. We add chorizo for some extra protein and spice, but the vegetarian version should still satisfy.
For dessert, the Waffle Ice Cream Sandwich catches our eye. Light and crispy Belgium waffles close in on a delicious black sesame ice cream, and the dish also comes with fresh mango, strawberry puree and peanut praline. It’s a well balanced dessert that’s not that sweet. I am a bit biased because I love desserts with Asian flavours, but it is something that’s quite different, and worth ordering.
It takes something special to compete with some of the other popular cafes just a walk away, and by the looks of things, Tamper has gotten off to a good start.
