Fukuryu Ramen, translating to "Lucky Dragon", is the first Australian restaurant from restaurant group Hakata Ikkousha. Popular in its home country of Indonesia, Ikkousha also has stores in Japan and other Eastern and South East Asian countries. Ramen restaurants are popping up everywhere in Melbourne these days and I had the opportunity to attend the soft launch of the latest one. Ikkoryu Fukuoka Ramen is hidden away on a basement level, where Ondergrounds Bar once was. There's quite a selection of sake and beer on offer, as well as Asahi on tap. Of particular note was the availability of Asahi black - the first time it's been available on tap outside of Japan. Located right at the southern end of Glenferrie Road, Wa Modern has been serving contemporary Japanese food since July last year. They also has a special lunch menu, though the dinner menu, which is mainly designed for sharing, is still available during lunchtime. Filled with lots of fresh seafood and combined with coriander, avocado and a touch of Kewpie mayo, the Wa Roll was one of the nicer sushi rolls I've had in a while. I didn't try much of K's Spicy Chicken Ramen Salad, but she really enjoyed it...

Still only a year old, Shizuku recently revamped its menu and has been rebranded by BTP Design to highlight its focus on ramen and craft beer. Shizuku is probably best known for being the first restaurant to introduce ramen burgers to Melbourne. One of the first things I noticed when I walked in was its rather funky set-up and intriguing light fixtures, which were designed and created by Earl Pinto in Collingwood. The menu has an extensive selection of dishes to share (zensai), which go well with their...
