Sushi Jiro - Spicy tuna, avocado maki topped w seafood stick ($3.50)

Sushi Jiro, Box Hill

I love the versatility of sushi in the way I can order to suit my level of hunger; anything from a bite to quell the grumbling stomach, all the way to a full dinner. Today’s visit to Sushi Jiro was more of a quick snack stop whilst traipsing around Box Hill Central, rather than a proper meal.

At the time we visit there’s a special on – $3.50 per plate, excluding premium plates. The special deal plus school holidays means there’s was a bit of a wait, but within 10 minutes we’re seated, watching those plates drift towards us with eager eyes.

Sometimes it’s easiest to judge the quality of sushi with the basics, but I’m unable to nab a plain salmon nigiri. They must be too popular. The flamed scallops of the aburi hotate nigiri are slippery, the aburi salmon has a nice suppleness and subtle charred flavour, and the unagi is smooth, though not particularly fatty in texture and flavour. The spicy tuna, and avocado maki looks like it’s topped with a crab leg, but it’s actually a well-formed seafood stick. The seafood used is fresh, but overall, the sushi rice doesn’t quite hold together and there isn’t much seasoning apparent in the rice.

You’ll find this cash only sushi train near Nene Chicken and Furuta Dessert House. Sushi Jiro also has another window where you can purchase ‘sushi on the go’, including maki, rolls and nigiri.
