Spring St Grocer, Melbourne CBD

What a wonderful feeling it is to reach the end of written exams and have the freedom to spend time on a lazy lunch. We took a casual stroll over to Spring St Grocer to indulge in ice cream and explore the interesting things they had for sale.

Suckling Pork w. Fennel, Dill, Watercress, Brioche ($15)

Today’s sandwich bar menu had so many tempting options I found it difficult to decide on what I wanted most. I ended up picking a roll from the premium selection. Three thickly cut slices of roasted suckling pork were nestled in two small brioche buns with fennel, dill and other herbs. The flavours were simple but delicious, and of course the and the audibly crunchy crackling made it even better. The pre-packed salads and juices in the fridge seemed like a popular choice for many and the salads were made from a very long list of interesting and healthy ingredients.

There was also a visit to the cheese cellar downstairs and some sampling of beautiful cheeses. The brie had a lovely subtle fungal flavour that left quite an impression.

Pistachio Gelato, Hazelnut Gelato, Green Apple & Basil Sorbet ($7.20)

The refreshing and different green apple and basil sorbet (a seasonal flavour) and creamy hazelnut and pistachio gelato made a good end to our lunch outing. Of these my favourite was the moreish pistachio. Sadly I don’t venture to this part of the city that often, but if I’m ever nearby and in the mood for gelato or a good sandwich or roll, Spring St Grocer will definitely be near the top of the list.
