30 Dec Son in Law, Collingwood Take 3
At the moment, Son in Law is perhaps most famous for its Instagrammable fairy floss drinks and desserts. Staff express their inner creativity by making the drink decorations and chocolate balls by hand.
Even before the fairy floss drinks were introduced, Son in Law had a pretty tasty food menu, and thankfully that’s still the case. As always, the Son in Law Eggs have a well-balanced sauce, and their Tom Yum Soup has a good punch of heat. The Thai Fish Cakes are smooth in texture, with a strong kaffir lime flavour within. A highlight is the Minced Pork and Prawn Rice Paper with a refreshing mixture of mint and coriander inside, and a tangy tamarind sauce drizzled over the dish.
The Sizzerling Roti is crispy and charred, and has a prominent matcha flavour. There’s a variety of textures from gooey marshmallow, crushed cashews and vanilla ice cream, and though it may not be a dish you’d want to be sitting next to on a hot day, it’s definitely something unique.
House-made Chocolate Magic Balls have a crepe cake hidden inside, and is revealed after the hot sauce is poured over it. It’s a bit sadistic to melt the character-themed balls away, but the result is worth it. Our choice of flavour today is the coconut and pandan, and it pairs well with the moist and creamy crepe cake. If you just want the crepe cake without the ball, that’s an option too.
You may be drawn to Son in Law by their drinks and desserts, but stay for the food too.
