17 Sep Sake Jr, Melbourne CBD
The Sake brand has broken into the fast casual market with Saké Jr, which tries to bring extra healthy choices to the in-a-rush crowd. Bowls can be built to your liking with their Japanese and Korean-inspired bases, proteins and toppings. Pre-made dishes, soups, meals, and even breakfasts, are also waiting to be picked up by people who are even more time-poor, or for the indecisive.
The process is broken down into steps: base, protein, vegetables, sauce and garnishes. We build one bowl with a based of seasoned sushi rice, choosing miso-glazed cod as the protein. Another is made using udon rice noodle sticks and crispy sesame pork. The udon noodles sticks are reminiscent of the glutinous rice-based Korean tteok, but these are wheat-based and feel firmer. All the sauces are tasty, but there are bottles of kimchi sriracha, yellow yuzu sambal, and spicy jalapeno soy on the table, which you can squeeze in for extra flavour. Our favourite vegetable add-on are the brussel sprouts, which are soft, caramelised and seasoned with a kimchi vinaigrette.
Quick, tasty and healthy, Sake Jr is a welcome addition to the growing fast casual family.
