13 Dec Paik’s BBQ, Melbourne CBD
Baek Jong-won’s food empire has now expanded to Australia, with Paik’s BBQ opening up on Little Lonsdale St. Highlighted on the menu are Yeoltan Bulgogi and Kimchi Stew, both of which are the specialties of his other famous restaurant, Saemaul. We didn’t try the Yeoltan Bulgogi today, but can confirm that the Pork and Kimchi Stew (Chibun Daweji Kimchi) is rather good. The stew comes with a huge bowl of rice, and also seaweed to sprinkle over it.
It’s also a nice touch to have a good spread of banchan (side dishes), and staff are happy to top them up if needed. If you order the Nakji Bokkeum, you’ll receive a large pan of smooth and slippery udon, and quite a generous amount of octopus too.
We try three types of meat for the barbecue – Wagyu (Deunsim), Beef Rib Finger (Neukgansal) and Mansingchang pork belly (Mansinchang samgyeopsal). The proteins are of high quality, and are beautifully tender and succulent once cooked.
There are a quite a few Korean BBQ places around Melbourne, but Paik’s BBQ stands out as one of the better ones I’ve tried.
