My Other Brother

Just behind Burke Road at the rear of the building, you’ll find My Other Brother, the sibling of Julien Moussi’s former cafe, Annoying Brother Espresso in Fitzroy North. Sharing a carpark with the Camberwell Sunday Markets, it’s predictably busy on market days.

Iced Coffee ($7.50)

The smoothies at MOB look similar to the likes of Penta, Tinker and Temperance Society. No surprise, seeing as it’s part of the same cafe group. Iced Coffee comes bottled, to be poured into a jar at the table. It’s a refreshing drink, and is still full flavoured.

Eggs Benny - Southern fried chicken w chipotle hollandaise on dark rye w two poached eggs ($19)

MOB’s Eggs Benny comprises of Southern fried chicken, poached eggs and chipotle hollandaise on dark rye. The chipotle hollandaise is a good match for the flavoursome and crunchy fried chicken, and the rye adds a slightly sour, earthiness to the mix.

My Other Brother - Berbere Smashed Peas w butter bean puree, black quinoa, halloumi, poached egg, Ethiopian berbere spice, sourdough add fried cauliflower ($19+6)
Berbere Smashed Peas w butter bean puree, black quinoa, halloumi, poached egg, Ethiopian berbere spice, sourdough add fried cauliflower ($19+6)

Not usually one for vegetarian brunch dishes, the Berbere Smashed Peas surprises. Along with the peas is a butter bean puree, black quinoa scattered over the top, slices of grilled haloumi and a poached egg. The strikingly red coloured Ethiopian berbere is sprinkled around the edges. It’s a symphony of flavours: tangy butter bean puree, salty halloumi and spice from the berbere. The quinoa gives it some extra bite. Everything is well balanced.

The Pitaya and Chia Bircher is bright and colourful. It comes with COYO, cranberries, small segments of desiccated coconut, strawberry slices, passionfruit segments, crushed pistachio and plenty of mixed seeds. The sweeter bircher, which really isn’t too sweet at all, is countered by the tangy coconut yoghurt. It’s a lighter option that still satisfies because of the abundance of pumpkin seeds in the bowl.

It was too hot today to have any hot coffees today, but the team at My Other Brother is passionate about espresso, making it a good stop for coffee and colourful meals.
