There are plenty of hip eateries in Collingwood, but sometimes you just feel like splurging those calories on some greasy American food. Mr Scruffs is just the place for that. Food is ordered at the counter and served in no-frills cardboard boxes. Seats can be hard to come by, especially on Wednesday nights, where food is half price.
Smokey Confit Lamb Ribs come with salsa verde and a smoked almond crumb. The tasty meat has been cooked for so long that the meat practically slides off the bone when I go to pick them up. Crunchy, yet melt-in-the-mouth Eggplant Chips are crumbed with corn chips. The squiggles of cheese sauce have plenty of japaleno punch.
Mr Scruff’s Cubano has pulled pork, ham, smoked cheddar, dijon mustard, and pickles. The bread is super toasted, almost shattering over the top of the moist ingredients inside. There’s a nice smokey flavour throughout that comes from more than just the cheese. There are also a number of burgers to choose from on the menu as well, the classic being their beef burger with cheese, Mr Scruff’s Special Sauce, pickles, and onion. Burgers can be customised and piled high to your heart’s desire.
Poutine, one of the Canadian exports most likely to be the subject of food porn, is slathered in a mound of cheese, crispy bacon, and gravy. We add pulled pork, just to be extra indulgent. These chips are incredibly good.
Forget the diet if you come to Mr Scruffs. Embrace the dark side.
