03 Jul Mr Hobson, Port Melbourne
Sitting by the Station Pier precinct with views of the bay, Mr Hobson is a large venue, available for functions and private dining. Floor-to-ceiling windows take advantage of its waterfront position.
Breakfast switches over to the restaurant menu from 12pm, and we come in for lunch. The Smoked Salmon Croquettes have plenty of smooth potato with small flecks of smoked salmon. There’s a cheesy flavour in the crust, and the garlic aioli is a good partner. The pastry of the Lamb Cigars is a bit thick, and not crispy all the way through, but the slow-cooked lamb within them is soft and tender. Pickled cucumber and lemon yoghurt provide a nice contrasting tang.
Juicy pan-seared scallops arrive on top of a smooth cauliflower puree, topped with crispy prosciutto and drizzling of truffle oil. The truffle oil flavour of the beef Carpaccio isn’t very apparent, and the meat is a tad too chunky, but it does have a nice pepper crust, complemented by both the horseradish aioli and beetroot puree.
House-made prawn tortellini is accompanied by grilled calamari, a thick squid ink butter sauce, and large, tasty parmesan crisps. There’s a slight hint of lemon, lifting the flavours of the dish. The house-made pasta is a bit thick, and there’s not a lot of filling inside, but the overall combination of flavours is enjoyable.
Pork lovers will love the Confit Pork Belly. The plate comes not only with pork belly, but also a pork roulade wrapped with prosciutto, and chorizo and chive croquettes. It’s a hearty and meaty dish. The Seafood Saffron Fettuccini is rather rustic-looking, but it’s still smooth to the tongue. There are plenty of prawns, scallops, calamari and mussels in the bowl, paired with a simple dressing of olive oil, white wine, chilli and mixed herbs. The dish is actually quite spicy, but full of flavour.
The Chocolate Layer is a dessert of dark chocolate bavarois with a white chocolate panna cotta topping, chocolate mascarpone, chocolate ice cream, and chocolate tuille. The mascarpone has an odd plasticky texture, but the bavarois is light and airy, and the panna cotta layer of the dessert is delectably smooth. We enjoy the dessert with the Coffee Delight dessert cocktail is rich and delicious, made from a mixture of espresso, Kahlua, Baileys, and vanilla ice cream.
The relaxed vibe at Mr Hobson makes it easy to appreciate its waterfront views, and a good setting for all sorts of occasions.
