Eyal Shani’s world-famous Israeli street food canteen has opened its sixth outlet in Melbourne. It’s loud and lively with all the music, sounds from the open kitchen, and staff calling out orders. It’s also very casual, and people are free to stand around or take a seat on the wooden bleachers while waiting for, or eating their order.

There such a great range of pita pockets on the menu it can be hard to choose, and the specials menu can make it even more difficult. Pita with a Bone is a good place to start. The lamb bones slide out from the meat easily. Pull them out, throw them away, and enjoy the tasty combination of lamb stew, tahini, pickles, onion and chilli. The Minute Steak comes with tahini, chilli, tomato, pickles, onions and a bit of kick from chilli.

Not everything on the menu involves that soft, fluffy pita. The Sac de Coque is a bag full of roasted chicken, herbs, onion, fried potatoes, and aioli. Baby cauliflower is roasted in the oven and seasoned simply with oil and salt. Charred bits gives it character, and it’s so creamy and tender you can eat it by pulling it apart using only a fork. There’s a condiment station downstairs, so feel free to slather that tahini all over it.

Miznon is fun and a little chaotic. Some of those protein options might get a tad pricey, but they certainly make for a flavoursome eats, and if you’re on the go, everything comes served in paper so it’s easy to take away. A return visit has been marked out; some of those pitas are calling my name.
