Miss Frank, Camberwell

Miss Frank

Perched right on the edge of Camberwell just off Riversdale Rd, Miss Frank is the last shop before you find yourself in Surrey Hills. The spacious, open plan cafe is done up in a minimalistic style, and apart from the wooden furniture, is largely decked out in stainless steel, polished concrete and lots of white paint.

First up is the Southern Fried Chicken Burger. The buttermilk-battered chicken is teamed with Swiss cheese, cos lettuce, pickles, tomato, slaw, and their mississippy comeback sauce on brioche. The fries it comes with are crisp and tasty, and the chicken is crunchy and well seasoned. The occasional spicy note comes through the Mississippy sauce, matching with the slight kick from the seasoning of the fries.

Paella - Chorizo and prawn w red pepper, garden peas, fresh herbs, lemon ($22)

Paella is a dish not often seen on brunch menus, making it an exciting option. Not that we need another excuse to order one; we love paella. The single-serve pan comes with chorizo, prawn, red capsicum, and peas. The top surface exhibits some char for extra flavour, and though there isn’t a whole lot of crispy rice at the bottom, socarrat isn’t a feature of paella we necessarily expect from a cafe. The rice is more salty and oily than I’d like, but it’s also full of rich flavour that makes it our favourite dish today.

Miss Frank - Cacao Ricotta Hotcakes w peanut butter sauce, vanilla ice cream, banana and strawberries ($18.50)
Cacao Ricotta Hotcakes w peanut butter sauce, vanilla ice cream, banana and strawberries ($18.50)

The decadent Cacao Ricotta Hotcakes arrive with peanut butter sauce, vanilla ice cream, banana and strawberries. They’re dense rather than airy, but still moist, and we love the saltiness that the peanut butter brings to the dish. The fruit and ice cream provides relief from its richness. It’s more like eating a chocolate cake than hotcakes, but we don’t really care. It’s delicious.

Spanning from the healthy to the not-so-healthy, and from brunch staples, to dishes where international influences can be seen, there’s a good variety of food to be found at Miss Frank.
