30 Jul Middle South East, South Yarra
Middle South East is a new cafe, restaurant and bar all in one. Modern Australian dishes with Middle-Eastern flavours can be enjoyed in the newly renovated space designed by Biasol. There are plenty of heated and comfy-looking seats outside too, which are set to be enjoyed during the warmer months.
There’s a large drinks menu, which includes fresh juices, shakes and smooth and delicious hazelnut lattes. The Middle-Eastern influences can easily be seen in dishes like the Middle South Eggs with Persian feta, fresh chilli, and sujuk, and the Lamb Salata – Lamb loin, quinoa, fresh pickled veg, beetroot, tomato Persian feta, pomegranate.
The Eastern Patties are a tasty and moist combination of sweet potato and chickpea, and are teamed up with bacon, grilled Baladi cheese, black Araak tomato, poached eggs and zhoug, a spicy and herbal condiment that really lifts flavours of the dish.
Homage to Teta is one of the most heart-warming (and filling) scrambled eggs I’ve had to date. Cumin scrambled eggs come with filled zucchini, labne, mujadara and baked mushroom. The tender baby zucchini are stuffed with a homely mix of rice and other ingredients, and the inclusion of the lentils and rice of the mujadara makes it an even more comforting dish.
Another favourite are the waffles, which have a nice crispy crust and are accompanied by blueberry marble mousse, almonds, macadamia praline and syrup.
It’s only a newbie, but it will be interesting to see what new and interesting flavours Middle South East will serve up in the future.
