Originally we had a group of 10, which meant we would be forced to order the banquet menu. One person couldn’t make it in the end, but even though we didn’t have to order the banquet, the majority decided to anyway.

The $70pp banquet menu:

  • Betel leaf topped with smoked trout, chilli, lime juice & crispy eschalots
  • Eggnet with pork, prawns, peanuts, bean sprouts & sweet vinegar
  • Whole deep-fried fish
  • Mussaman curry of Cape Grim beef with coconut cream
  • Caramelised pork hock with chilli vinegar & deep fried eschalots
  • Tomato & snow pea salad with sesame & tamarind dressing
  • Stir fried Chinese broccoli with soy, ginger & crisp garlic
  • Rice
  • Selection of desserts

We were given three large share plates per course. Two people in the group were vegetarian, so one of the three plates was the vegetarian version. For most of the courses the vegetarian option was the same, but with silken tofu instead of meat.

The dessert selection included caramel custard, watermelon sorbet, sago w. ice cream, something with passionfruit, rice pudding with coconut on top and a ?black rice dessert with shavings of coconut (this one reminded me of pulut inti)

The much-anticipated pork hock was juicy yet crispy on the outside, though it was quite sweet. The food wasn’t bad, but I still felt it was expensive and overrated.

My photography skills weren’t up to scratch today so a few of these photos are blurry; I’d like to partly blame the low light…though that’s a poor excuse.
