14 Dec Lolo and Wren, Brunswick West
Lolo and Wren may have opened up a burger joint next door, but they haven’t neglected the original cafe. A new menu and extra outdoors seating breathes new life into the venue.
They pimp up their Mork hot chocolate with marshmallows, making it a delicious treat. Slow Cooked Pork Jowl comes with a sticky glazed, crispy egg and a salad of pickled red cabbage, bok choy, shiitake mushrooms, chilli and crackling. The pork jowl is unctuous and quite fatty, though the tang of the accompanying sauce helps to cut through it.
The Crispy Croque Monsieur is a show-stopper for cheese lovers. Between the slices of bread are shaved leg ham, Swiss cheese, and cheese and chive cream. The whole things is then coated in breadcrumbs and fried. The homemade tomato relish helps offset the richness of the dish, which oozes with all the cheese and cream. It’s a heavy dish suited for big eaters, or for sharing.
Lolo and Wren’s Candy Apple Pancakes are a highlight. It’s a generous serving of two medium sized pancakes that are moist on the inside, has a sweet, crispy crust thanks to the glaze, and lots of apple. Certainly one of the more memorable hotcakes I’ve had of late and we easily wiped the plate clean.
Lolo and Wren left a good impression on my last visit, and they definitely did not disappoint today!
