Duck foie gras (30% liver) with preserved goose breast

Mum and dad had the set menu for €17.90, which included walnut salad. Dad’s pick of the entrées was a foie gras terrine with fig and onion chutney; mum had duck foie gras (30% liver) with preserved goose breast. Mum and dad picked exactly the same main: Magret of duck with cêpe sauce and sarladaise potatoes. For desserts, mum had crème brulee and dad had apple and raspberry crumble. I just had a main – the truffle omelette with walnut salad and potatoes sarladaise.

The walnut salad was dressed with Dijon mustard and the walnuts were fresh. The foie gras here was nicer than at Bistro de l’Octroi; it was smoother and didn’t have much of the typical liver taste. Its flavour was quite similar to the foie gras in mum’s mashed potatoes at La Maison de Halles. The preserved goose breast was also better here. Dad’s duck was overcooked, but mum’s was fine. The cêpe mushrooms, a regional mushroom, had a very intense and nice flavour. Before ordering my omelette I confirmed that it did in fact contain truffle, not just truffle oil. There were little slivers of truffle throughout as well as three thin slices on top. I was happy to see that the omelette was not overcooked – there were still a few parts were the egg was slightly runny. Though simple, I quite enjoyed mine. I could smell the truffle every time I lifted the fork to my mouth. The potatoes were also good. The garlic wasn’t as strong, but I think I preferred the taste of the sarladaise from yesterday.

The desserts came out very quickly so must have been completely pre-prepared. Mum’s didn’t have the crackly caramel on top and it wasn’t completely smooth, though the flavour was OK. Dad’s wasn’t too bad but would have been better if warm.
