09 Nov Lillie Eatery, Prahran
Lillie Eatery is a new cafe from the people behind Grange Road Egg Shop. It’s much larger than expected; spacious with a good amount of spacing between tables. Locally-made picture frames hang from the ceiling, and an aquarium adds a calming element to the space.
Looking a bit like mini schnitzels, the 5 Spice Fried Chicken is lightly crumbed and crispy. Sriracha mayo is made available for dipping into, and the cucumber and cabbage slaw is freshly prepared, adding some lightness to the dish.
There are a few salad options to mix and match, with the option of adding protein in too. I have a fear of encountering strong gamey flavour in lamb, especially in salads where the flavour is not easily masked. No issues here. Today we pair the lamb with the Cauliflower, Wild Rice, and Golden Raisin salad, as well as the Radicchio salad, which is particularly good.
Lillie dresses up Dr Marty’s Crumpets with vanilla mascarpone, blueberry compote, crushed walnuts and burnt honey. There’s just a little bit of sweetness, mellowed out by mascarpone. It’s a great alternative to the ubiquitous hotcake trend.
Lillie is a solid option for locals and nearby workers. There’s a huge range of counter treats, sandwiches, salads and other goodies to take away too.
