11 Dec Leroys, Newport
Recently refurbished, Leroys is warm, unpretentious and family and pet-friendly. Indeed, during Sunday brunch it’s full of young families, most of them enjoying the outdoors space enclosed by timber framing. An additional courtyard is currently being constructed at the back.
Campos coffee and tasty smoothies start the meal. Using ethical and sustainable produce, the menu has been crafted by Sam Pinzone. He’s previously trained with the likes of Neil Perry, Jacques Reymond and Paul Wilson, and has two chef hats from The Gault & Millau guide under his belt. Leroys also has some of their own pastries on display including slices, cronuts and muffins.
We pick items from the all day breakfast menu. Magic Mushrooms consists of mushroom duxelle, fricassee of mushrooms, roasted eschalots, potato rosti, Bulgarian feta and a 60-degree egg. Oyster, enoki and a other varieties of mushroom are well-seasoned and peppery. Feta contributes another dimension of saltiness.
A meatier option comes in the form of the Weekend Warrior of thick cut bacon, braised beef cheek, corn fritters, onion puree, black pudding crumb, roasted field mushroom, 60-degree egg and sourdough. The grilled bacon satisfies, the corn fritters are crunchy, the mushroom is moist and the egg is perfectly done. The highlight on the plate, though, are the tender beef cheeks.
The OMG Pancake certainly inspires such a reaction when sighted. The towering pancake stack is topped with whipped ricotta coffee cream, salted coffee cacao, hazelnut crumb, popping candy, burnt fig ice cream and chocolate fairy floss. Colourful popping candy delights kids and adults alike. The pancake is thick but evenly cooked with a chewier crust, and i sa little more cake-like in texture. They’re amongst the best pancakes I’ve had recently.
A family-friendly café with delicious food will be a gem in this area. The courtyard opening soon will only increase Leroys’ appeal as a breakfast and lunch destination.
