Kuu Café and Japanese Kitchen, South Melbourne

Kuu

Occupying a cosy little building in South Melbourne, Kuu is a Japanese café open for breakfast right through to dinner. The menu largely revolves around healthy, balanced food, but popular not-so-healthy things like katsu and karaage are also served.

The matcha latte was milkier and less intense with the matcha flavour than Little Rogue’s version. Matcha affogato came with an intense matcha syrup to pour over the vanilla ice cream rather than the traditional coffee, and I actually enjoyed this more than the latte.

Kuu - Udon noodles served warm in kombu seaweed dashi soup and prawn tempura ($14)

Mum has had a recent craving for a good bowl of udon, so she ordered the udon noodles with prawn tempura. The broth was too strong in the soy department for mum’s liking and the noodles were not quite smooth.

Kuu - Smoked Trout Ochazuke - Brown rice served in warm dashi broth topped with smoked trout, chopped spring onion, sesame seeds, shredded nori seaweed ($14.50)

My ocean trout ochazuke was topped with a broth that looked almost like very diluted tea, but was actually quite flavoursome. I preferred the lighter broth of ochazuke to the one in the udon.

Kuu - Japanese Brekky Platter for the Hungry – Two onigiri, two salads of the day, poached egg with white sesame hollandaise sauce, grilled salmon, miso soup ($17.50)

We also shared the Japanese breakfast platter ‘for the hungry’, which is only available on weekends. Coming with two onigiri, two salads, poached egg with white sesame hollandaise sauce, grilled salmon and miso soup, this is good option for those who want a bit of everything. We both particularly enjoyed the smoked trout onigiri and the sesame spiked hollandaise.

Kuu

Kuu is popular despite its limited seating. Come in to enjoy a honest and healthy Japanese alternative for your morning meal.
