As the casual sibling of George Caloumbaris’ empire, Jimmy Grants provides a bit of fun, bringing fresh ingredients without all the greasiness. The Richmond store boasts impressive architectural design. Glitzy golden arches and mirrors make it seem much larger than it really is.

Pita bread is wrapped around a range of different proteins, from rotisserie chicken and 12-hour slow cooked lamb, to the beef short rib found in The Americano (my fave). The vegetarian option is the Homer – falafels, Greek yoghurt and Hellenic slaw. They’re not ginormous, so if you have a big appetite you might need two (or upgrade to the Almighty size, which is about 50% bigger than the regular size). Here the souvas contain chips, but the chips can also be enjoyed as a tasty side with herbs and feta.

Though famous for its souvas, Jimmy Grants also does platters. Lamb and/or chicken can be matched with pita and your choice of salad and sides. My personal favourite of the salads is the Grain Salad – a textural mixture of pulses, nuts, grains, herbs, Greek yoghurt, onions and coriander. Another worthy order are the Saganaki Soldiers with lemon and honey sauce.

Finish off the meal with some light and airy Loukoumades. Traditionally they are drizzled with syrup, but Jimmy Grants also does a version with a rich chocolate sauce, freeze dried raspberries and a crumble with nuts and seeds.

With a number of locations around Melbourne and now Sydney, it’s not too difficult to get your fix of casual Greek at Jimmy Grants.
