18 Jun Izakaya Jiro Grill & Sake Bar, Hawthorn
Izakaya Jiro opened late last year on Glenferrie Road so we thought we’d try out the new local restaurant for lunch.
There’s a wide range options on the lunch menu. Mum ordered the Tofu Steak Teishoku (Organic tofu with mixed mushroom teriyaki sauce, $9.80, came with rice, miso soup, salad & appetizer”) – and I had the Seafood Bento (Mixed Seafood with Wafu Sauce served with Daily Appetizer, Assorted Tempura, Sushi, Sashimi, Steamed Rice, Miso soup, $16.80)
The appetiser for the day was a mix of sliced shiitaki mushrooms and taugeh. Mum’s teishoku tofu was cut into three rectangles and fried in a light batter, topped with a enoki and shiitake sauce. She thought the tofu was good but the sauce a bit rich and overpowering.
The components of my bento were: tempura (prawn, eggplant, zucchini, sweet potato), mixed seafood (2 pieces each of prawns, battered fish, calamari and scallops), sushi and sashimi (salmon, tuna and kingfish). The sashimi was very good, particularly the tuna. Mum didn’t think the tempura batter was crispy enough. The first piece I ate (the sweet potato) was ok, but didn’t eat the prawn until a bit later after mum said she didn’t want it. By that time the batter would have lost its crispiness anyway so I couldn’t pass judgement. The mixed seafood was nicely cooked. I was actually a bit surprised that there were scallops in it and one of them was quite large. The wafu sauce itself was not as strong and robust as mum’s teriyaki sauce.
It was only after we had ordered that we noticed there was a specials board with some enticing dishes on it. We’ll have to come back next time.
NB: Teishoku means set meal
