28 Apr Curry Smuggler, Fitzroy
Sitting in a quieter section of Brunswick Road, Curry Smuggler aims to deliver Indian food so good it’s as if they’ve smuggled it in.
Daaku Di Tangri chicken drumsticks have lamb mince hidden inside and is marinated in tandoori spices and yoghurt. The cheesy, slightly creamy sauce adds a good hit of flavour to the moist protein. I haven’t had much tandoori-cooked fish in the past, so the Salmon Tikka was a bit of an adventure. It’s nicely cooked and well seasoned.
Arriving on a sizzling hotplate, the Tawa Chicken is less intense on the chilli scale, and really does have a nice smokey flavour. The spicy and slightly tangy Beef Vindaloo is also executed well (and is one of the spiciest curries on the menu!), but my favourite is the Goat Curry. The meat is tender, and surprisingly not overpoweringly gamey.
Living up to its vision, Curry Smuggler delivered some of the best curries I’ve had in a while.
