05 Jun The Boot Factory, Coburg
Set up in the middle of heart of Pentridge village, The Boot Factory exudes a rustic, neighbourhood charm. Its name pays homage to the building’s former purpose within Pentridge Prison: a boot factory and uniform store.
The building has since been restored, but keeps some of its original light fixtures and fittings. The old storage upstairs is now a cosy carpeted function room, popular for parties, and the child-friendly cafe has plenty of space for a crowd.
We start to warm up with Toby’s Estate coffee and a matcha latte that seems to have a hint of cinnamon.
The Kale and Raw Broccolini Salad comes with chargrilled corn, black turtle beans, puffed wild rice, goji berries, fresh avocado and a spicy grainy mustard dressing. The salad is full of fresh flavours, and the extra addition of hot smoked trout makes it more enticing for the winter months. There’s also an unexpectedly large serve of sweet potato fries with a citrusy chipotle aioli for those that, like me, love fried carbs.
The Slow Braised Beef Cheek is teamed up with a horseradish cauliflower puree and heirloom carrots. The puree is rich and thick, and although it could be smoother in texture, and have larger horseradish kick, it does round out the flavours of the tomato-based braise quite nicely. The protein itself is soft and tender – exactly what I love about this cut of beef.
Their rendition of mushrooms and toast sees wild mushrooms sauteed with plenty of truffle-infused butter before being piled over toasted brioche, and showered with shavings of ricotta salata. The thick slice of brioche is also quite buttery, making it a fairly rich combination together with the buttered mushrooms, but butter and mushrooms are a beautiful match, and it’s a comforting and uncomplicated dish.
With their unpretentious fare and warm and friendly environment, The Boot Factory is set to be a popular place for the residents of the new development popping up nearby.
