14 Feb Bluestone American BBQ, Coburg
Coburg welcomed Bluestone American BBQ to Sydney Road mid-last year. I’m always partial to American BBQ, so a visit was eagerly scheduled in. Chef Alvaro Malel brings a unique take on low-and-slow American BBQ, drawing on his Uruguayan background to inject a few touches of South America to the menu.
The menu is designed to be shared, and there’s plenty to choose from. If you’re indecisive or want to try a bit of everything, there’s the option to go with one of the the ‘Pitmasters Picks’, which is essentially a range of set menus.
We go with Pick 3, which has a good variety of both meats and sides.
All the proteins are handled nicely, but standouts include the Applewood Chicken Chops and crunchy Southern Fried Chicken, which are both incredibly juicy. The meat on the Pork Spare Ribs tear away from the bone cleanly, and their smokey brisket and pulled pork is tender.
I’ve heard the beef short-rib with chimichurri is very good, so I might have to head in another time!
Disclaimer: I was invited to Bluestone American BBQ as a guest, however, opinions expressed here are purely my own, and are based on my experience at the time.
