Bluebird Espresso, Collingwood

Bluebird Espresso was listed in Epicure as serving the best smashed avocado in Melbourne. Since it’s on the way to uni I thought I’d pop in to see how it was.

The avocado pieces were quite large and more chopped than smashed, but I’m not fussy. At first glance, there didn’t seem to be heaps of avocado, but looks can be deceiving; when I spread it out over the lovely, crusty, tasty multigrain sourdough toast, there ended up being a layer of avocado ~2.5cm high. I’d say there was nearly a whole avocado there, so it was pretty good value. Although a slice of lemon provided on the side, I didn’t use much of it because there was a lot of tartness from the feta. I couldn’t see a lot of feta pieces so it must be quite strong.  Unfortunately the poached egg was overdone. Because of the amount of avocado and the sourness of the mixture, it probably would have been better to get an extra egg to tone it down and balance the flavours a bit more.

Overall the dish was pretty good, though to be honest, I still prefer the simple flavours of salt and pepper mashed avocado that we’ve been making at home since first introduced to the concept nearly 10 years ago.
