11 Jul Ayame, Malvern
The long-standing Ayame has been providing this Glenferrie Road strip with modern Japanese food since 2008. Sushi and sashimi makes up a large portion of Ayame’s menu, and the Ayame Special Platter features a selection of items to simplify the choices for you. Tuna, salmon and scallop sashimi, nigiri, a mini special roll and miso prawn are on the platter tonight. The seafood is fresh, and the sushi possesses a good balance of protein and rice.
The Nasu Dengaku is twice cooked and melt-in-the-mouth, with plenty of umami coming through from the dark miso – highly recommended. Tender Gyu Niku Tataki is doused with plenty of tangy Ayame special sauce, and baby spinach to brings a fresh counter to the creaminess.
On a similar note, the Ayame Eye Fillet Steak comes with a tangy sauce as well as a dark miso mayonnaise. It’s a substantial serving, and arrives cooked to a perfect medium-rare. The beef is quite a contrast to to the lighter, more delicate flavours of the Pan-fried Barramundi Fillet with zucchini noodles, wakame and ginger soy broth. The ginger is prominent but not overpowering, and the crispy-skinned barramundi is handled very nicely.
We finish with a Matcha Creme Brulee with green tea ice cream and a little plum wine on the side, and a slice of rich Chocolate Cake.
It gets pretty busy when we visit on a Thursday night. Bookings are recommended, especially for weekends.
