16 Nov Addict Food and Coffee, Fitzroy
Today marks my return to to one of my Fitzroy favourites, Addict. On weekends it’s still as popular as ever, and I often spy a queue outside when I drive past. As usual, there are specials that frequently change over, so there’s often something new to try.
There are plenty of great dishes, and it’s hard to nail down just one as a favourite. On the current menu there are moist Sweet Potato Fritters that have hints of cumin. Spiced hung yoghurt, fresh herbs, pickled shallots, crispy sweet potato and poached eggs complete the dish.
Their Son In Law Eggs Benedict comes with chunky pieces of smoked eggplant, a good hit of tom yum in the hollandaise, fried onion, coriander, fried curry leaf and roti. Though it’s hard to photograph well, it certainly satisfies the tastebuds – the flavours work in perfect harmony.
The large, singular Mozzarella and Jalapeno Croquette has a crunchy crumb and smooth interior, that displays strings of cheese when torn open. It arrives with a colourful array of accompaniments that complement the star of the dish very well. There’s a bit of spice in the dish too, which helps break up the heaviness of the croqeuette.
Finally we come to the Chocolate Brownie Waffle. It’s crisp, yet fudge-like in the centre – like a brownie in the shape of a waffle, pretty much as the dish name suggests. Passionfruit and coconut ice cream, and a berry gel are the perfect foil for the richness of the waffle. The shards of meringue and a pile of chocolate soil adds some extra texture that I love.
Addict is still a cafe worth revisiting, and remains one of the more innovative cafes in Fitzroy.
