17 Aug Tall Timber, Prahran
Tall Timber is one of those cafes that’s been on my list for ages, but never got around to for a long time. Even when we get there for a late lunch on a weekday, it’s still quite busy, and groups continue to file in.
The Timber Benedict has been a signature staple on their menu, with slow cooked pork shoulder, poached eggs and apple cider hollandaise. The eggs are perfectly poached, but it’s hard to detect apple cider in the hollandaise, and the pork is dry. We love the contrast that the apple provides to the dish, but wish for more of it to balance with the generous serving of protein.
The Cured Salmon Gravlax fares better. The cured salmon has a good level of smokiness, the smashed peas are almost creamy and nicely seasoned, and there’s a cumin in the beetroot relish for a touch of spice. The capers together with a squeeze of lime lifts the flavours, and counters the saltiness of the fish.
Though not perfectly executed today, the menu at Tall Timber has plenty of interesting dishes which may warrant a revisit at some stage.
